What are composite shutters?

Exterior composite shutters are constructed from an innovative engineered wood product. Extira is specifically manufactured for moisture-rich outdoor applications. It is a dense rigid material that results in an attractive, yet durable, exterior shutter.

This impressive material is man-made from 90% sustainable wood fibers adhered with marine-grade resins. It is pressed into large straight sheets which are cut in-house into individual window shutter components.

Composite solid panel shutters have a very realistic appearance, and some styles are hard to differentiate from genuine wood. The vertical styles and horizontal rails of outdoor composite raised panel shutters have only slight differences in size and in profile than natural wood. The raised, flat or shaker panel section of wood shutters is composite, making the two shutters virtually identical in display. The shaker or flat panel styles also appear nearly the same as its wood counterpart.

There is one conspicuous discrepancy in the configuration of synthetic composite louvered shutters. Individual PVC and wood louvers are milled, cut, and arranged with space between the slats. Composite louvers are sculpted in banks of multiple simulated slats with no separation in between. Historic renovation projects should only employ genuine wood louvered shutters or PVC louver shutters. Otherwise, the lack of space between louvers should not distract from the comprehensive presentation.

Composite raised panels and louvers cut on a diagonal expose the embedded wood fibers that can cause the surface to become slightly rougher than the face. This standard characteristic is universal and unavoidable. Sanding causes wood fibers to dislodge, resulting in more craters. Filling with wood putty results in an inconsistent patchy texture, which is also not desirable. For smooth louvers, consider the wood or PVC alternatives.

We do not make composite Bahama shutters due to the lack of function and versatility. Bahama shutters need space between louvers for ventilation and visibility.

Only a marginal distinction between wood and board & batten composite shutters is detectable. Composite slabs are engraved with vertical partitions to create the illusion of realistic vertical boards. The resulting board and batten shutters arrive with a remarkable appearance and are adaptable to any environment.

Composite is the best material for exterior shutters

How do you measure for outdoor composite shutters?

Stationary window shutters only need to appear that they will close over the opening. Measure both the width and height of each window. Divide the width in half to obtain the recommended panel size. Exceptionally wide windows will be unable to adhere to the basic composite shutter measurement guidelines. Some homeowners then forgo using an outdoor window treatment or use panels smaller than would obviously fit for aesthetic purposes only.

How are composite shutters installed?

Each exterior shutter is custom made to the specified width and height. For the best presentation, measurements are offered in ¼ inch increments. Composite shutters are manufactured with one presentable side, so they can only be installed in a fixed position. ShutterLand outdoor composite shutters ship with clear Polycarbonate installation brackets. The brackets must be used to affix the decorative shutters in a static location beside the window. Installation using any other method will void the warranty. Installation of exterior composite shutters can be accomplished by most homeowners.

Composite shutters CANNOT be installed with functional shutter hardware. If the shutter needs to be able to swing open and closed, consider either PVC shutters or wood shutters.

The appearance of composite shutters can be enhanced with faux shutter hinges and shutter dogs.

How much do composite shutters cost?

Homeowners love that exterior composite shutters are surprisingly affordable. The price is higher than vinyl panels but lower than premium wood shutters. Easily get a quote for any shutter by navigating to the desired style page, then entering the requested specifications.

Can you paint exterior composite shutters?

Yes, outside composite shutters can and should be painted. The synthetic material does need to be primed in advance of the application of a top coat paint. While we do sell unfinished shutters, we advise ordering primed or fully painted shutters. Some types of primers do not adhere well to the material. Our factory formulated prime coat is the perfect bond between the outdoor composite shutter and paint. We have identified nine popular paint colors which have become our standards. If one of those does not meet your criteria, select from unlimited custom colors for a one time matching fee of $200. Some of the most frequently used colors are Tricorn Black, Black Forest Green, Hamilton Blue, Charcoal Slate Gray, Tudor Brown, Cottage Red, and Burgundy. All sides are painted for a complete finish.

Can composite shutters be stained?

The composite material does not absorb liquids and therefore cannot be stained.

What is the life expectancy?

A simple semi-regular observation of the paint finish should keep exterior shutters looking and functioning optimally for many years. Repair any minor cracks or ruptures in the paint with the touch-up jar included with every order. Repainting may be performed at the same frequency as the house.
