Solid PVC exterior shutters are extremely versatile and can be installed in either a stationary position next to the window or with hinges to swing open and closed. The intended function of the shutters is used to determine the best approach for measuring. The following guide and video will help establish the best style, size, and configuration. Once ordered, PVC shutters are built to the specifications provided and shipped direct. Install PVC shutters using the assistance of our written instruction and how-to video.
Tools required include a steel tape measure, ladder, pencil and paper to record the measurements. Expect to spend about 5-10 minutes to measure each window.
Solid PVC exterior shutters, in conjunction with quality outdoor hardware, install to either side of a window opening to swing open and closed. Recessed window openings can accommodate shutters that nest inside, while shallow windows need shutters that close in front of the casing. When open, PVC shutters accent the appearance of the window and gives full access to the window. Closed, these exceptional exterior shutters can shade the window, provide privacy and protect from rain, wind or heavy storms. The fit in both the open and closed positions needs to be taken into account when measuring.
PVC shutters installed in a permanent position are purely for decoration. They mount with brackets at the top and bottom of each shutter. The necessary v-shaped Polycarbonate brackets and screws are included with the shutters for easy installation. Measurements for stationary shutters are more forgiving than for functional shutters, yet the goal is to always make them symmetrical to the size of the window. They should simulate the appearance the look of functional shutters, and can even be enhanced with the addition of dummy shutter hardware.
Time needed: 10 minutes
Step to measure for functional PVC shutters that install with hinges
If the dimension is greater than 1.25″ and you wish for the closed shutters to nest inside of the opening.
For deep windows: measure from inside edge to inside edge. Subtract the amount needed for clearance. We suggest a 0.25″ on each side and a 0.25″ in between the shutters. Divide that measurement by 2 for the individual shutter width.
For shallow openings: Measure the width of the window exceeding the opening on either side by at least 0.5″. Subtract a small deduction for clearance (no more than 0.25″) and divide that measurement in half to calculate the individual shutter width.
For deep windows: Measure from the top of the window opening to the bottom of the opening. Deduct a slight amount for clearance (about 0.25″ at the top and 0.25″ at the bottom) to achieve the shutter height.
For shallow openings: Measure for the shutter height to overlap the window opening by at least 0.5″ on both top and bottom. Often, the height of the shutter will align with the outside of the casing.
Shutters can be made with a divider rail that creates top and bottom sections. Specify the division point for the divider rail by providing the measurement from the bottom of the shutter to the desired center of the divider.
If a custom location is desired, provide the measurement from the bottom of the shutter to the identified center of the divider rail.
For two divider rails, note the location of each from the bottom of the shutter to the center of each.
Proceed to obtain the necessary shutter hardware. Better understand what is required by exploring our exterior shutter hinge guide and shutter dog guide.
Operable exterior hinges are necessary to give PVC shutters the ability to swing open and closed. It is best to evaluate the various hinge options for installation at the same time window measurements are taken. Survey the available mounting surface and establish the necessary offset.
Shutter Height | “Strap” or “Acme” hinges |
---|---|
If < 84” | 3+ hinges: top, bottom & center 1 lower support (shutter dog or wall bracket) |
If > 84” | 4+ hinges: top, bottom & center 1 lower support (shutter dog or wall bracket) |
Shutter dogs restrain outdoor window shutters in an open position to either side of the opening. Tiebacks work in a variety of ways to lock and release the panels, with many in ornate designs to give the house added interest. Shutter dogs can also be used in conjunction with stationary shutters to add visual interest.
PVC shutters can be made with a curved top designed to match the contour of a round top window. Arch top exterior shutters require a springline measurement to define the slope of the curve.
Tropical PVC Bahama shutters are designed to cover an entire window opening with a single panel. Record measurements of the entire window width and height as specified above. Exceptionally wide windows can be covered in multiple Bahama shutter panels.
Exterior PVC shutters are milled to look and work like natural wood shutters, but with the resiliency of a synthetic material. The material is exceptional in both beauty and durability.
