Description

Aluminum colonial shutters hinge and open to the side of the window, allowing them to open for natural light and unobstructed views. When closed, they lock securely with storm bars to provide robust protection against hurricanes and tropical storms. Their evenly spaced louvers allow air to flow through while maintaining durability.

Built to meet the rigorous standards of Florida, Miami-Dade County, and the Texas Department of Insurance, these hurricane shutters offer reliable defense against potential catastrophic damage when properly installed. In addition to storm protection, colonial shutters can also be used in fair weather to shield windows from harsh afternoon sunlight or maintain privacy from nearby neighbors.

Details

Aluminum colonial shutters are popular in coastal regions to defend from tropical storms and hurricanes. They are extremely effective to shield windows to prevent damage.

Colonial Aluminum Shutter Types

There are two types of aluminum colonial shutters: hurricane impact-rated and decorative only.

Hurricane shutters are manufactured with reinforced louvers to protect vulnerable windows from high winds and flying debris. Aluminum shutters comply with the nation’s strictest building regulations including the Florida Building Code, Miami-Dade County Codes, and the Texas Department of Insurance Code. The hurricane shutters have been large missile impact tested for High-Velocity Hurricane Zones (HVHZ).

Decorative louvers are very rigid but are hollow and not made to absorb heavy impact. Both variations offer 1.5-inch louvers, but decorative-only shutters can also be made with 2-inch louvers.

Measure Colonial Hurricane Shutter Size

Functional colonial aluminum shutters are ordered as full units, using the width and height measurements of all shutters across. They cover windows with one, two, three or four shutters across. ShutterLand provides specific written and video instruction on how to measure for outdoor aluminum louvered shutters. The pre-attached hinges will secure to the building just outside of the window opening.

Colonial aluminum shutters can also be order for stationary use. Fixed shutters employ brackets that attach to the side of the window. The shutters screw to the brackets, locking them in place. Fixed shutters are ordered as individual panels.

Louvered Aluminum Shutter Unit Configuration

The number of shutters across is determined by the unit width. The configurations possible are listed in the schedule above. The fold pattern should be decided with consideration of the available wall space to the outside of the window.

Colonial Shutter Divider Rail

A divider rail is a horizontal bar that creates top and bottom louver areas. It can be inserted for visual interest but is not required for structural purposes. Specify the divider rail location by measuring from the bottom of the shutter to the center of the division.

Louvered Aluminum Hinge Depth

A standard hinge is available when a single shutter swings open to the side. A build-out hinge becomes necessary when two shutters hinge together and open to the side.

Locks for Hurricane Shutters

Aluminum hurricane shutters require a locking system to fully protect the window in the event of a strong storm or hurricane. Two very effective methods are offered.

Storm bars are horizontal U-shaped beams that span the width of the unit and screw to the outside of the shutter. They are stored in a remote location until needed.

Pin latches are vertical sliding bolts embedded into the side rails opposite the hinge side. A tension knob is used to move the bolt and lock it into place. A bracket is included that can be attached to the building to receive the latch. The bracket is finished the same color as the shutters. Specify if the tension knob is to be accessible from the inside or outside of the building. If “inside” is selected, the shutter height ordered needs to be short enough so the knob can be reached through the open window to lock the shutter closed.

Exterior Aluminum Shutter Colors

The finish of colonial shutters is impeccable. Aluminum shutters feature a durable, smooth, and weather-resistant powder coating, available in 20 standard RAL colors, offering a range of classic and modern shades to suit various architectural styles. For a more customized look, homeowners and businesses can choose from 174 RAL custom color finishes, providing an extensive selection to match specific design preferences. Beyond aesthetics, the powder-coated finish delivers exceptional protection against corrosion, UV exposure, and harsh weather, ensuring longevity with minimal maintenance. For enhanced durability, especially in coastal environments, an epoxy prime coat is recommended.
