Description

The simple composition of premium wood board and batten exterior shutters is what makes them globally appealing. Vertical boards are braced with horizontal battens to form well balanced and substantial exterior shutters. Board and batten shutters are not only visually attractive but can be hinged to swing over the opening for protection, privacy, or light filtration. Or they may be permanently fixed in position adjacent to the window with screws or bolts. Our premium wood board and batten shutters are constructed from solid weather-resistant kiln dried Red Grandis, Cedar and  Mahogany in quarter inch width and height increments. Use ShutterLand wood board and batten shutters to replace existing panels or add new for a lasting home improvement.

Exterior Shutter Hardware

Wood exterior shutters can be installed with functional hardware to swing open and closed. ShutterLand does provide some guidance to help determine the best shutter hinges or shutter dogs. ShutterLand does not sell hardware, but does have a trusted source with great selection, helpful customer service and reasonable pricing. Alternatively, stainless steel screws may be used to secure the shutters directly to the building in a fixed position.

Board and Batten Construction

ShutterLand board and batten shutters are constructed with the highest standards to ensure many years of dependable service. We start with straight lengths of hand-selected lumber. The wood is then planed, cut to length, cut to width, routed, sanded, primed, sanded, assembled with industrial strength exterior glue, corrosion resistant screws, and corrugated joint fasteners. If specified, the exterior shutters are then covered with two coats of high endurance, water-borne commercial-grade acrylic paint. Each step is carefully scrutinized to insure quality and consistency.

Farmhouse Shutters

Wood board and batten shutters are likely the first window covering ever invented. Sometimes called farmhouse shutters, the popular style is used worldwide for a variety of purposes. Outside board and batten shutters have a rugged quality that allows their use on contemporary and traditional historical houses alike. Board and batten shutters can be easily modified to best conform to the window which it will be installed. Vertical boards may be positioned with either no space between or with a gap between the members. An optional third or fourth batten may be selected, situated horizontally or diagonally in a z-pattern.

Wood Shutter Installation

Both rectangular and arch-top windows may benefit from the installation of board and batten shutters. Hinges allow the shutters to swing open to either side of the window and closed if needed. The back side of board and batten shutters have no detail and may not be suitable for some applications. A stationary mount with screws or bolts permanently adheres the exterior wood shutters to the wall neighboring the window.

Exterior Wood Shutters

Three premium woods will provide years of reliable service. Red Grandis, Cedar and Mahogany have all been installed and tested by thousands of homeowners nationwide. These woods are offered because they each possess unique traits to hold shape, resist moisture and remain stable. Shutters are made with 1 inch thick components. The board width is determined by the total measurement of the entire shutter.

Factory applied paint is a protective barrier from outside elements. We provide nine color options to match or complement an existing palette. This array may still not suit the requirements of certain projects, so a custom paint color may be specified for a onetime charge of $200. White or light-base colors may require an additional $35 per shutter. The increased amount is applied because light-based colors are more difficult to apply than darker colors, and will be presented for approval before an order is processed. Wood shutters are fully primed and sanded prior to the application of two coats of exterior grade paint.

In some cases it may not be desired to have the shutters finished in the production process. For DIY homeowners who wish to finish themselves, unfinished or primed shutters can be purchased. The priming process takes place before components are assembled so all surfaces can be covered. It is strongly recommended that outside shutters that will eventually be painted are ordered with factory priming. We only suggest unfinished board and batten shutters for staining.

Premium wood board & batten shutters take about 4-6 weeks to manufacture. After construction is complete, the exterior shutters are shipped direct to your house.
