Exterior Shutter Hardware

Wood exterior shutters can be installed with functional hardware to swing open and closed. ShutterLand does provide some guidance to help determine the best shutter hinges or shutter dogs. ShutterLand does not sell hardware, but does have a trusted source with great selection, helpful customer service and reasonable pricing. Alternatively, stainless steel screws may be used to secure the shutters directly to the building in a fixed position.

Wooden Board & Batten Shutters Construction

Builder grade exterior shutters are installed to add focal depth, texture and color to a once dull home. The affordable wooden board and batten shutters accomplish all of those goals with clean lines that complement all aspects of the exterior. Economy Pine shutters are constructed  with straight lengths of hand-selected lumber planks. The wood is then planed, cut to length, cut to width, routed, sanded, primed, sanded, assembled with industrial strength exterior glue, corrosion resistant screws, and corrugated joint fasteners.

Pros

+ Priced less than premium woods
+ Can be installed with functional hinges
+ Historically accurate
+ Sustainable kiln-dried lumber
+ Solid / Straight / Smooth components
+ Full range of sizes available
+ Unlimited paint colors
+ Can be stained
+ Free shipping for most sizes

Cons

– May expand and contract more than premium woods
– Shorter life expectancy

Board & Batten Shutter Configurations

Vertical boards are initially cut to length and positioned to form the mass of the shutter. Board widths and number are determined by the total shutter width measurement specified. Planks can be configured tight together or with a gap between the members. Two horizontal battens lay on top of the boards and unite them into a single panel.

A third or fourth batten may be specified to secure equally spaced between the top and bottom battens. Alternatively, a diagonal batten can be chosen to form a z-pattern, popular on barns and the traditional farmhouse.

Arch-top shutters in the board & batten style can simulate the contours of a curve-top window. A springline measurement is needed to replicate the arc.

Wooden Shutter Installation

Wooden board and batten shutters can be installed to attach permanently to the house with screws, bolts, or another stationary method. However, the installing with hinges maximizes function and appearance. Hinges allow the shutters to swing open to either side of the window and closed if needed. Shutter hardware contributes to another style element to the window design. Shutter dogs hold exterior shutters in an open position and come in a variety of designs.

The back side of board and batten shutters have no detail and may not be suitable for most applications that regularly require them to close over the window.

Board & Batten Finish Options

Factory applied paint is a protective barrier from outside elements. We provide nine color options to match or complement an existing palette. This array may still not suit the requirements of certain projects, so a custom paint color may be identified for a one time charge of $200. White or light-base colors may require an additional $35 per shutter. The increased amount is applied because light-based colors are more difficult to apply than darker colors, and will be presented for approval before an order is processed. Wooden board and batten shutters are fully primed and sanded prior to the application of two coats of high endurance, water-borne commercial-grade acrylic paint. Touch-up paint is included.

In some cases it may not be necessary to have the shutters finished in the production process. For DIY homeowners who wish to finish themselves, unfinished or primed shutters can be purchased. The priming process takes place before components are assembled so all surfaces can be covered. It is strongly recommended that outdoor window shutters that will eventually be painted are ordered with factory priming. We only suggest unfinished wood if the shutters are intended to be stained.

Premium wood board & batten shutters take about 4-6 weeks to manufacture. After construction is complete, the exterior shutters are shipped direct to your house.
