The concept of vinyl board and batten shutters is simple. Assemble 2-8 vertical boards braced with horizontal (and sometimes diagonal) battens. The boards can be spaced with open or closed weave in 20 different configurations. An open weave incorporates a small gap between vertical members.
Most exterior shutters are rectangular in shape with a straight top. However, some windows with a curved top require an arch top shutter to resemble the contour. Arch top shutters have a curved stile that gradually descends from the shutter peak on one side to eventually intersect the vertical portion of the opposite side. Often, the arch is a 1:1 ratio, meaning the distance from the top point to where the arch begins is equal to the width of the shutter. This scale works for windows that incorporate a half circle at the top of a rectangular bottom, the most common type of round top window. Some arch top windows are not perfect and employ a curve that requires a special profile. A springline measurement is required to construct a custom arch top shutter.
Two, three, four, five, or six cross battens are used to give distinction. Some styles use diagonal boards in either a z-pattern or x-pattern common on country homes or barns. Vinyl farmhouse shutters are sold in pairs, so unbalanced designs (including arch tops, z-pattern, and slant tops) will receive two mirror image panels. Vertical boards in some styles can be of different lengths to give a completely original appearance.
The durable polypropylene material is heat welded and stapled tight together with molded wood grain surface texture to effectively mimic the look of wood. A select number of common shutter widths offered in regular intervals pair with custom heights in one-quarter inch increments up to 97”. The width determines the number of boards that are used. All ornamental vinyl shutters have a hollow open back that gains rigidity when affixed to the wall. The material is weather-resistant, water-proof and has an extended life expectancy.
Sizes are nominal, and the actual width received may vary by 1/4 inch more or less than ordered. The actual height will be within 1/8 inch of the size ordered.

19 standard outdoor colors coordinate well with both mature and newly constructed homes. Vinyl black shutters are definitely the most popular and widely installed. Black shutters complement existing features of the house while remaining neutral in tone. White and grays work in a similar fashion to promote a unification of all components of the building.
Blue, brown and green shutters may garner greater prominence but also highlight the windows and draw attention to the front door. Red shutters are the ultimate accent and will catch the eye. Vinyl shutters can be secured on a variety of house surfaces. We provide metal screws that will be placed at the intersections where the boards and battens intersect. Use “Shutter Screws” to attach to wood, vinyl, and other soft siding. If installing to brick, masonry or concrete, a wall anchors will need to be employed. The screw heads are color coordinated to match the specified shutter color. Vinyl shutters can only be installed in a stationary position and cannot be functional (swing open and closed with operable hardware).

Red Grandis is a nearly perfect high quality hardwood to manufacture exceptional exterior shutters. It has straight tight grain and minimal knotting, resulting in a consistently smooth texture. The fibers are relatively uniform in color with variations from light pink to dark red, and accept paint or stain well. Red Grandis is dimensionally stable and extremely strong.
Cedar is the most common and recognizable tree species for the construction of outdoor shutters. This aromatic timber is resistant to both insects and decay. Cedar has condensed grain with few knots, resulting in straight handsome shutters with tones of red, brown, and tan. Cedar paints and stain well.
Mahogany has a compact grain with a rich, warm, reddish-brown hue. Mahogany shutters are strong, sturdy, and moisture resistant. Mahogany is relatively easy to finish and is heavier than other woods offered.

A horizontal divider rail is necessary to separate the top section of a combination shutter from the bottom. The solid panel section is composite. Divider rail size is displayed under “Dimensions” on the main order page

Straight top shutters are manufactured with a square horizontal top.
Arch top shutters are made with a curved top.
The specified shutter height is the dimension of the long vertical edge of the shutter.
The required springline is the measurement from the top of the shutter down to the start of the arch.
Composite exterior shutters install in a stationary position to the side of the window with the included Lexan polycarbonate fixed mounting brackets.

Bahama shutters install to the top of a window with functional hinges and extend away from the building at the bottom with shutter stays. The shutter can nest inside of a window opening with sufficient depth or sit just proud of the trim. Most Bahama shutters cover the full height of the window, while others are shorter and serve as a canopy over the top portion.

Eyebrow top shutters are made with a slight curve in the top from the high side of the shutter down to the opposite side. Select from either a 1″, 2″ or 3″ drop. The drop (also called the springline) is the measurement from the top of the shutter down to the start of the curve. The shape of the raised panel area will remain rectangular.
A pair of eyebrow top shutters includes one shutter with the drop on the left side and one with the drop on the right.

Red Grandis is a nearly perfect high quality hardwood to manufacture exceptional exterior shutters. It has straight tight grain and minimal knotting, resulting in a consistently smooth texture. The fibers are relatively uniform in color with variations from light pink to dark red, and accept paint or stain well. Red Grandis is dimensionally stable and extremely strong. Paneled area is composite (see below).
Cedar is the most common and recognizable tree species for the construction of outdoor shutters. This aromatic timber is resistant to both insects and decay. Cedar has condensed grain with few knots, resulting in straight handsome shutters with tones of red, brown, and tan. Cedar paints and stain well. Paneled area is composite (see below).
Mahogany has a compact grain with a rich, warm, reddish-brown hue. Mahogany shutters are strong, sturdy, and moisture resistant. Mahogany is relatively easy to finish and is heavier than other woods offered. Paneled area is composite (see below).
The central solid panel is fabricated from Extira, a composite material manufactured from sustainable wood fibers and marine-grade resins. Extira is designed for outdoor applications where humidity and moisture varies. It is strong, resilient and holds its shape in all weather conditions.
Southern Yellow Pine is the most affordable solid wood option. This wood has a beautiful golden color with a distinct wood grain pattern that is 99.9% knot free. It is kiln-dried to minimum moisture content and cut to 1″ thick shutters. The joints between stiles and rails are glued, doweled, and screwed for ultimate strength. Southern Yellow Pine shutters are considered entry-level, or builder grade, with lower performance standards compared to 1.5″ thick premium wood shutters.
The central solid panel is fabricated from Extira, a composite material manufactured from sustainable wood fibers and marine-grade resins. Extira is designed for outdoor applications where humidity and moisture varies. It is strong, resilient and holds its shape in all weather conditions.
A divider rail is a horizontal bar (much like the top rail) that creates louver areas above and below the division. The divider rail height is 3.5″.

Straight top shutters have a standard horizontal top.
The arch of a 1:1 drop is equal to the width. So the measurement from the top of the shutter down to the start of the arch is the same as the shutter width.
A pair of arch top shutters includes one shutter with the arch on the left side and one with the arch on the right.
A custom arch requires a springline measurement.

Flat panel shutters are constructed with a central even surface with no detail.
Shaker panel shutters are fabricated with vertical grooves cut into the central surface. The number of grooves is based on the shutter width.

2 grooves for shutter widths 12” to 17 ¾”
3 grooves for shutter widths 18” to 23 ¾”
4 grooves for shutter widths 24” to 31 ¾”
5 grooves for shutter widths 32” to 39 ¾”
6 grooves for shutter widths 40” to 45”

PVC exterior shutters install to the side of the window using one of two methods.
Stationary shutters permanently attach to the side of the window in a fixed location.
Functional shutters mount with operable exterior hardware to pivot from a position flanking the window to cover the window opening.
How the window is measured depends on which of these two options is selected.
