Aluminum Shutter Colors

The final step in manufacturing aluminum shutters is applying the finish. Unlike other materials which are finished with traditional wet paint, aluminum shutters are uniquely treated in a process called powder coating. The protective layer is applied in our facility with specialized equipment for a smooth, durable surface available in a wide range of vibrant colors.

ShutterLand offers 20 standard exterior shutter colors. The colors shown below may not accurately reflect the actual color. It is highly recommended to request a physical powder-coated aluminum sample before placing an order.

Standard RAL Colors

RAL is a widely used standardized color matching system that defines colors for paint, coatings, and plastics. It provides a simple yet comprehensive framework for selecting and reproducing colors across a wide range of applications. The system is especially valued for its precision and consistency, ensuring uniformity in color reproduction regardless of the material or manufacturer. We have chosen 20 of the most popular colors to provide as standard. These colors are selected based on their popularity, versatility, and timeless appeal, making them suitable for various design and architectural needs.

Select from multiple shades of black, grey, brown, green, blue, and white. All colors, except those designated as matte, are applied with a 40% gloss sheen. This specific gloss level strikes a balance between a subtle shine and a professional, refined appearance, ensuring the colors look vibrant while maintaining a sophisticated finish.

Custom RAL Colors

If a more refined hue outside of the conventional offering is desired, a selection can be made from the vast array of additional RAL colors. This extensive range of 174 additional colors ensures that every design vision can be realized, from bold and striking shades to soft, understated tones. To view, a full RAL color deck may be ordered on Amazon. The color deck is an excellent reference tool for professionals and homeowners alike, enabling color selection tailored to individual preferences.

Note that the high gloss on paper can look slightly different than the 40% gloss applied to aluminum. The visual disparity highlights the importance of testing the colors on the intended material and finish, ensuring the final result aligns perfectly with expectations. Many designers or painters possess an RAL color deck for reference.

The specification of a custom RAL color will incure a one-time charge of $350 and add at least 14 working days to the production time.

Powder Coated Shutters

Powder coating is a technique used to apply a protective finish to metal surfaces, including aluminum. This durable and environmentally friendly process offers superior resistance to corrosion, fading, and wear, ensuring longevity and aesthetic appeal. The process involves several steps with specialized equipment. First, the aluminum is thoroughly cleaned and treated to remove any contaminants, oils, or residues that could interfere with coating adhesion. This preparation stage is critical in achieving a flawless finish. Next, a dry, colored powder is applied electrostatically to the surface. The charged particles are attracted to the grounded aluminum, creating a thick uniform layer that adheres evenly. Finally, the coated aluminum is cured in a high-temperature oven, where the powder melts and bonds to form a smooth, stable, even finish. The result is a surface that combines beauty with exceptional functionality, making it ideal for various architectural applications, especially in tropical climates.

The powder-coated surface of aluminum exterior shutters thoroughly covers all areas, including the hinges. This comprehensive coverage ensures a consistent appearance and long-lasting protection against the elements. It is smooth to the touch and slightly reflective, offering an elegant finish that enhances the overall aesthetic. The finish is impeccably resilient in warm humid conditions, where moisture can be particularly harsh on untreated materials and UV rays can be intense. Whether used in coastal areas or other regions with extreme weather conditions, aluminum shutters maintain their integrity and visual appeal over time.

Epoxy Prime Coat

The application of an optional epoxy prime coat enhances the bond between the aluminum and the powder. This intermediate layer provides a strong foundation for the final finish, improving adhesion for the topcoat application. It promotes an extended life, especially for homes along the coast, where salt and moisture can accelerate wear and corrosion. The undercoat is a worthwhile investment and highly recommend to extend the life of the finish, particularly in challenging environments or exposure to salt air.

Care and Cleaning

Routine cleaning not only helps preserve the luster of the shutters’ brilliant finish but also extends the overall lifespan. Use a soft bristle brush or towel to gently clean the surface with a diluted solution of mild automotive soap and water. To avoid streaks or residue, rinse thoroughly with a garden hose before the solution dries.

Testimonials

John R.

These are the best shutters (quality and price) I have found anywhere.

Doug B.

The shutters really are beautiful. The painter we are using took one look at them and said "these are the heaviest, most sturdy shutters I have ever painted. Too bad more people don't realize what a better investment they are than the junk I see most of the time." Stay well. Thanks again for your excellent service and product quality.
